The Soil As A Source Of Renewable Energy Thermal energy can be extracted from the earth at greater depths: geothermal energy. The temperature at a depth of 1500 m is about 50 - 60° C. Earth offers the possibility to store heat or cold in one season and to use this energy in another. Such energy may be stored in subsoil sand layers (aquifers). By applying cold energy storage, it is possible to provide cooling in summer by means of winter cold. This cold energy was captured in winter by cooling down groundwater by using atmospheric air or surface water. Conversely, the seasonal storage of heat in subsoil offers the opportunity of space heating with summer heat in winter. |
